Developmental Checklist

The following is a list of general observation of your child’s behaviour and learning. If 5 or more of these observations are present in your child/student, you are most welcome to refer your child to us for an evaluation. We will then draw up a programme of regular individual sessions to facilitate improvements in your child’s behaviour and learning abilities.

 

 

Ø  In Infancy:

o   Trouble with nursing, sucking or digestion

o   Lack or  excessive response to sound

o   Inability to hold head upright

o   Trouble following movement with eyes

o   Absence of or unusual form of creeping and crawling

o   Delay in or premature sitting, standing or walking

o   Delay in learning to talk

 

Ø  Easily distracted, lacks concentration

Ø  Excessive daydreaming

Ø  Unusual quietness and lethargy

Ø  Inability to follow more than 2 instructions at a time.

Ø  Impulsive and uncontrolled behaviour

Ø  Purposeless hyperactivity – constantly moves around the room.

Ø  Constant interrupting and persistent chattering.

Ø  Rocks on chair

Ø  Winds feet around chair legs, sit on legs, can’t cross legs on floor, ‘w’ sitter

Ø  Slouch at the table. Leans head on non-writing hand

Ø  Poor abstract reasoning skills

Ø  Does not understand what is asked even though they have listened well

Ø  Slow to do tasks and doesn’t finish work

Ø  Cannot focus on more than one thing at a time eg. cannot listen and write at the same time

Ø  Problems with hand-eye coordination e.g. poor ball game skills, poor swimming skills

Ø  Poor or unusual pencil grip

Ø  Poor handwriting ability and poor expression of ideas on paper

Ø  Immature letter formation and /or writes in block letters

Ø  Spelling and general creativity of written work is markedly improved when no writing is involved.

Ø  Awkward body position/posture when writing

Ø  Difficulty crossing the midline. Picking an object eg pencil with one hand and passing it to the other.

Ø  Reverses letters, numbers and writes English from right to left and Arabic from left to right.

Ø  Difficulty copying from the board

Ø  Reading problems, especially when reading aloud

§  misreading words

§  missing or repeating words or lines

§  omitting letters

§  slow reading

§  inability to remember what has been read

Ø  Reads well but do not understand what they have read

Ø  Reading is satisfactory, but cannot do math

Ø  Children who can do math, but cannot read well

Ø  Poor co-ordination, frequent falls, bumps into things, clumsy

Ø  Low muscle tone

Ø  Overly tense muscles, especially neck, shoulder, back muscles.

Ø  Tight, tense, often has curled up fingers and grinds teeth

Ø  Leans on desk, table, wall, instead on two feet

Ø  Toe walker

Ø  One or both feet may turn in when walking

Ø  Homolateral (like a robot or puppet), instead of normal cross lateral movements eg. when walking, marching, skipping

Ø  Tendency towards motion sickness

Ø  Low tolerance to stress

Ø  Continuous anxiety

Ø  Over or under react to fears

Ø  Temper tantrums

Ø  Over emotional – teary and feeling down

Ø  Angry – small trigger may cause outburst

Ø  Reacts badly to change of routine

Ø  Sleeping difficulties

Ø  Difficult to settle at bedtime

Ø  Nightmares and/or terror mares

Ø  Low self esteem insecure

Ø  Has large need to control or manipulate and/or dominate events

Ø  Over active, aggressive, highly excitable

Ø  Difficulty making decisions

Ø  Eyesight problems – no eye-teaming, sensitive to light, no convergence

Ø  Poor auditory discrimination skills

Ø  History of frequent ear, nose and throat infections

Ø  Afraid of heights

Ø  Poor sense of time

Ø  Disorgnised and forgetful

Ø  Makes silly mistake

Ø  Speech problems

Ø  Poor communication skills

Ø  Elective mutism

Ø  Poor communication skills

Ø  Out of touch with emotions

Ø  Bed wetter

Ø  Poor Memory, especially short term memory
